Question:

How do I identify top websites devoted to my topic as well as high-traffic, targeted websites?

John’s Answer:

Here’s a short answer. A long answer could require an entire book to answer (or, as I did in my 10 Million Eyeballs Internet marketing course, 10 long videos).

  1. Google your keyword for your topic, for example, crocheting Halloween costumes or chocolate chip cookie recipes.
  2. Then check the top 30 websites that show up.
  3. Eliminate the Amazon, Wikipedia, and similar generic links where you really can’t offer to add new content, etc. You want to be able to interact with real people behind real websites and blogs.
  4. When you have a list of 10 to 20 real blogs and websites, go to http://www.alexa.com and check their Alexa ranking. The lower the better. The most visited site in the world is #1. The least visited website in the world won’t even show up with a ranking since Alexa only ranks the top 20 million websites. Only the top 500,000 websites have meaningful traffic (although I might go as far as the top million sites).
  5. Begin contacting those sites that show up in the first 3 pages of Google for your keyword topic AND have an Alexa ranking of 500,000 or lower. Those will be the sites that are high-traffic and targeted to your keyword topic.

I know that’s a fairly simple answer, but it is the beginning. Once you’ve checked out some of the above sites and created relationships with them, you’ll find yourself discovering other related websites (because those top sites have already linked to them or featured them).

Again, a complete answer would require 10 long videos or multiple books. But start here.

Note: For searches, you can also use Bing. For traffic rankings, you can also check out Ranking.com or Compete.com.
