The following are some suggestions for sharing a book offered to top partners who might promote your book because they are the experts in the field. This list is excerpted from an email sent out by Carolyn Howard-Johnson, author of the forthcoming second edition of The Frugal Book Promoter.

The Frugal Book Promoter

I appreciate you and what you do for writers. I also appreciate our relationship, both personally and professionally. Because I know you are a marketer at heart, I know you may want to help me get the word out using your favorite promotion techniques. In the spirit of The Frugal Book Promoter, here are a few ideas.

  • Talk about it to members of your writers’ groups or authors’ organizations.
  • Talk about it when you’re milling around with other authors.
  • Add it (complete with URL!) to your handouts or resources on your website. It is: The Frugal Book Promoter: How to get nearly free publicity on your own or by partnering with your publisher. Notice the new, more all-inclusive subtitle!
  • Show it off at the writers’ conferences and book festivals you attend.
  • Announce it in your blog. Tell your subscribers how brilliant you are to be included.
  • Comment on this book at other blog sites.
  • Post notices about it in your newsletter. It’s sure to help your fellow authors.
  • Mention it as a resource in the articles you submit.
  • Talk about it when you are interviewed on radio/TV.
  • Write a review for it and post it on online bookstores, on your blog, or wherever.
  • Show it to local booksellers.
  • If time is short, just go to the buy page on Amazon (http://www.budurl.com/FrugalBkPromo) and “like” it. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be given the opportunity to brag a little on Facebook and Twitter—all automatically!
  • Don’t forget to add your name as a tag on Amazon and add the subject or subjects that are most likely to take readers to your page or pages as tags, too.
  • Gift your favorite writing friend with a copy for the holidays.
  • And, if you’d like to put a display ad on your website for it, I’d love that, too. Just let me know what I can send to help you with that.

Again, thank you for inspiring me, teaching me. You have been instrumental in what I know and what I can pass on to my readers—and yours.

  2. Inside Carolyn’s book I offer a free poster featuring the ampersand. (Did you know the word is a slurring of “and, per se, and”?) Here’s the link so you can offer your readers the free poster series: http://chazdesimone.com/amperart.html It is delivered monthly with professional tips on book design and brand identity. Enjoy!

  3. John, thank you for promoting Carolyn’s book on promotion! As the cover designer for this book (which was a lot of fun given all the O’s in her name and in the title) I have learned a LOT about self-promotion, and urge every one of my book design clients to purchase it. If they don’t I send them a copy. If I’m going to design their book, I want it to sell. And following the principles in “The Frugal Book Promoter” is the next best thing to an iron-clad guarantee that my clients’ books will become bestsellers. Carolyn is extremely knowledgable, generous and tech-savvy. Fun to design for too!

  4. Thank you for publishing this, John. I remember when we were both presenting at the Erma Bombeck Writers’ Conference at Dayton University we spoke at different times. I was so grateful for that twist of fate for it allowed me to attend YOUR presentation. We writers just need to keep learning from one another!
